Overview

Home science, also known as home economics is an interdisciplinary field that incorporates various disciplines, such as nutrition, human development, textiles, resource management, and family studies. It is basically concerned with the well-being of individuals, families, and communities by applying scientific aspects to daily life activities. It is a subject that would nurture skills that can increase the quality of life both personally, socially, and professionally.

MA in Home Science is a two year and four year course, offered by various universities across India. The course is designed to meet all those challenges that are faced in household management, community welfare, nutrition, and related industries, and making the students capable professionals in the said fields.
 

Course Objectives

From merely being confined to traditional domestic skills like cooking, sewing, and childcare, due to the changing times and emerging new needs in society, Home Science has expanded today to many other areas of home management. It has evolved today to assume a multidisciplinary approach by taking help from scientific principles and research in solving problems confronted in running a modern home.

The course provides students with skills in analytic thinking, problem-solving, and the capability of applying home science principles in their daily and professional lives. Students will develop advanced knowledge in the fields of nutrition, textiles, human development, and family resource management and practice this in community development, health, and well-being.

It will also engender independent research skills, culminating in the completion of a thesis project that represents technical competence and significant mastery in the field.
