Master of Arts (M.A) in Geography
By NCTA Duration: 2 Years Code: UDC-555Overview
Master of Arts in Geography is a 2-year course, divided into 4 semesters. Geography is the scientific study of the Earth's physical features and the spatial relationships between people and their environments. Geography is primarily divided into the two main branches: physical and human geography, which look at interaction with the world in two facets.
Physical Geography studies the natural elements of the Earth: analysis of the Earth's landforms, climate, organisms, and processes in the lithosphere. It studies the process by which naturally existing landforms, such as mountains and rivers, and climate zones are built up and the way they interact through ecological and geological processes. It includes sub-disciplines like geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, biogeography, and soil science, which give an in-depth understanding of the physical characteristics and dynamic processes of the Earth.
On the other hand, human geography explores the spatial aspects of humans' activities and their interaction with surrounding elements. It deals with the development, organization, and relations of human societies with their environment. This is the branch with studies of cultural landscapes, economic activities, urban development, population distribution, and political boundaries. Human geography deals with the way human action matters in the formation and is formed by its physical environment; it has to do with issues of urban planning, cultural identity, and environmental management.
Course Objectives
Master of Arts in Geography course imparts to the students a deep understanding of physical and human geography. This course involves acquiring the skills and knowledge needed in analyzing and trying to solve the complex geographical issues.
Overall, the program aims at an in-depth understanding of the interaction between natural systems and human societies. Students will acquire skills in critical thinking, research, and analysis of geographical data, field research, and apply these learning outcomes in practical problems. By the completion of the program, students will be well-prepared to work on issues such as environmental planning, urban development, policy analysis, and areas that require geographical input.
